This November, the Women’s Literature Club of South Brunswick High School, working with the Friends of the Library, called on the community to donate new and gently used young adult and children’s books.
Donation boxes were located at the school, the St. James Community Center, the Painted Mermaid, and the Harper Library. The boxes quickly filled up and by the end of the drive, about 600 books were donated by generous area residents.
We plan to donate all the books to the pediatric patients at Novant Health on Saturday, December 10, 2022.
We hope this book drive will further our goal of increased literacy in Brunswick County. We also hope these books will provide some comfort to children who will spend their holidays in the hospital.
Our next book club meeting will be on December 14, 2022, at which we will discuss the second half of The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. Reading this dystopian novel led to discussions on women’s rights in the club.
In addition to finishing this book, we will also distribute our book for the next month, which will be “The Bell Jar” by Sylvia Plath.
If readers are interested in exploring these books, they are available through the Brunswick County Library system.
What a wonderful way to bring our community together and impact literacy! Thank you Ellie, Ashley, and Madison!
